GREAT GATSBY
In the movie’s first big party at Gatsby’s mansion, the music, colours and camera work all show a world that looks exciting on the surface but feels empty underneath. The music sets this tone right away. Instead of sticking to old-fashioned 1920s jazz, the film mixes in modern songs, making the party feel loud, wild and over the top. It does not feel like people are truly having fun, they just seem caught up in the noise and trying to impress whoever walks by. The camera adds to this feeling. It zooms through the crowd, swings across the dance floor and jumps quickly from group to group without stopping. This makes the party feel rushed and chaotic, like everything is happening too fast to really mean anything. People are dancing and laughing but it all feels like a distraction from how bored or unhappy they might actually be. The colours in the mansion are also extreme, gold everywhere, bright blues, sparkling lights and over the top decorations. It all looks huge and magical at first...
